Manhu receives a warm welcome in Chicago, IL

By Shigeyo Henriquez

Manhu arrived in Chicago on September 7 after nearly twenty hours of travel. On the 8th there was no time to rest. The group was off to Fredric Chopin Elementary School in Chicago for its first workshop.

Chopin School is located on the west side of Chicago and a majority of students come from Hispanic and African American families.

3rd through 5th grade students sat in the auditorium quietly and paid attention to every song and word. During the program Alan, Manhu’s female vocalist, and Awa, percussionist, came onto the floor and asked a few students to participate in traditional Yi/Sani dancing. The forty-five minute workshop was well received.

Even though Chicago is a large ethnically diverse city, it’s still a very rare opportunity for these students to meet and hear Sani music and culture from China. Manhu was also really pleased to meet these students. It was a wonderful cultural exchange.
