Unni Boksasp Ensemble Completes 2018 Tour in Flint, Michigan

By Ken Carlson, Senior Program Director

A month ago, the Unni Boksasp Ensemble began its tour with a great week in Sterling, IL. The tour included warm connections and happy stories along the way and Flint provided still more.

Monday included a visit and workshop with students at Gear-Up Alternative High School. ABC News 12 paid a visit to cover Unni’s visit.

That afternoon included a visit to Fenton Community Schools—Ellen Street Campus where the ensemble met some very young students who couldn’t resist showing their appreciation in such a lovely way as Mia and Unni (pictured with Principal Lori Mora) will certainly attest.

The week included stops at Columbiaville Elementary, Otter Lake Elementary, Marion Crouse Instructional Center, Flint Local 482, Genesee Valley Regional Center and The Flint Public Library. Our hosts at the Whiting, with assistance from staff at the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, put together a great week with a wide variety of audiences that kept the ensemble on its toes.

Jarret Haynes, Executive Director at the Whiting, hosted a lovely reception for the ensemble early in the week and takes a moment here to visit with Kenneth Ekornes, percussionist in the ensemble. Thanks to Jarret, Loe’l (who accompanied the ensemble each day), and to the whole team at the Whiting.

And then it was concert night. John, Alison and Jeff from the Michigan Council, along with family and friends, paused for a photo outside the splendid Capitol Theatre where Unni’s concert was about to begin. It was great to see the ensemble name in lights too!

The Capitol is newly renovated. The ensemble looked and sounded terrific and also included local student hip-hop dancers the group met the night before at the Local. Some of the dancers joined Unni’s ensemble for a photo after the concert.

A short drive from Flint to the Detroit Airport and the ensemble was on its way home after doing some terrific work in Arts Midwest World Fest! Til vi ser deg igjen!
